At a farm in Northport, Michigan livestock are feasting on a diversity of food scraps every day. One day it might be salad remnants and pizza crusts, another day it might be leftover soup.
That’s because a nearby public school has instituted a food recovery program in which all leftover food scraps are diverted to feed chickens and pigs at a local area farm.
School's food waste feeds livestock

TRAVERSE CITY — The pigs aren't picky. Lettuce, peas, pancakes, it's all the same to them.
Livestock on Laura Cavendish's Northport farm are getting a few more vegetables than pancakes though, because that's what students at the local public school aren't eating.
Northport Public School started a program this school year that diverts students' and the cafeteria's food scraps from the trash and gives the leftovers to local farmers.
School board member Nancy Peterson suggested the program.
"Something that's bothered me for forever is how much food gets thrown out," Peterson said.

Clive H. Cavendish Died Sept. 3, 2015
Saturday, September 12, 2015
TRAVERSE CITY — Clive Howard Cavendish, better known as Dad, Grandad or Howard, passed away in his home in Traverse City while surrounded by loving family on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2015 at the age of 72.
He was our inspiration, our lifelong teacher, our biggest supporter, the hardest worker you’d ever meet, a walking plant encyclopedia, the man you’d call when your project went “pear-shaped” and most of all, our best friend. His absence is felt more deeply than words can describe. We strive to honor his memory by moving forward and pursuing his love of gardening, growing and ever-learning.
Once-common area veggie begins to crop up again
Friday, May 22, 2015
TRAVERSE CITY — Shareholders in Laura and Thomas Cavendish’s Community Supported Agriculture program are used to getting unusual farm produce like nettles and quail eggs.
But this spring their shares will include a root vegetable few know how to pronounce, much less prepare and eat.
Salsify, once common in the region, is making a comeback as more area farmers discover its versatility. The edible root, with black or white skin and white flesh, can be boiled, mashed, roasted or fried like a potato or other root vegetables, or steamed and browned in butter.
